Seeing Red by Susan Crandall opens with a fourteen year old Ellis Greene awaiting the sentencing of Hollis Alexander, the man responsible for the kidnapping, rape and attempted murder of her cousin Laura. Following the guilty verdict, Alexander makes a promise to Ellis that she’ll pay for the testimony that put him away and she can only pray that he’ll never be released to make good on that promise.
It’s been fifteen years since the kidnapping of her cousin, but Ellis Greene still lives in fear as if it happened only yesterday. Her only comfort is that Hollis Alexander is still in prison for the crime. When he unexpectedly gets paroled, Ellis becomes terrified he’ll make his threat real. It is the arrival of her friend Nate that helps her get through it and he has vowed he won’t let anything happen to her. Even though a lifetime has passed, Ellis loves Nate as if he never left, but age has changed their relationship and she no longer has only friendly feelings for him. There is an unbelievably strong attraction between them and the more time they spend together the more the attraction is growing. The only problem is, Nate can’t stay beyond the time needed to keep her safe. Will Ellis be able to convince Nate they belong together or is she doomed to lose him again?
Although Hollis Alexander was convicted of attacking Laura, there were still plenty of people in their small town who believed Nate was involved and no amount of proof would convince them otherwise. Immediately following the trial, Nate left town in a cloud of suspicion and was never heard from again, but he never forgot his friend Ellis. For all the years of his absence, he has been keeping tabs on her life and watching over her from afar. When Alexander is paroled, Nate knows it’s time to return so he can keep Ellis safe. After all, it was Ellis’ testimony that kept him from going to prison and he owes her his life. Nate, however, is unprepared for the feelings Ellis evokes in him and the harder he tries to resist her, the harder he’s falling for her. Will he be able to bring himself to leave her a second time?
I loved this book! This is the first time I had been introduced to Susan Crandall and I’m so glad I was. It was a terrific suspense with shocking disclosures that kept me guessing the entire time.
I loved Nate from the beginning when, as a teenager, he was already protecting Ellis. I loved him even more when he was willing to come back to a hostile town to protect her again. He was a genuinely good man with a good heart and precisely what Ellis needed.
Ellis had lived her entire life in fear, but she did everything possible to keep herself from being a victim by mastering self-defense and even teaching young women to protect themselves as well. She found strength within herself and lived her life to the best of her ability. It was easy to feel the love between Ellis and Nate and Crandall didn’t need to use explicit sex scenes to bring out the depth of emotion and passion between them. Theirs was a sweet romance and I was captivated from the first page to the last. I can’t wait to see what Susan Crandall brings next!
