Deborah Knott is district court judge of Colleton County, North Carolina and is married to chief deputy Dwight Bryant.   When Candace Bradshaw, chair of the county board of commissioners, neglects to show up for a meeting and is later found dead in her home Deborah and her chief deputy husband, Dwight Bryant, find themselves in the midst of this high profile case.  Candace was found dead in her bedroom with a white plastic trash bag over her head.  At first her death was believed to be a suicide.  After the autopsy the ME determined that Candace was dead before the trash bag was tied around her neck and ruled her death a murder, not a suicide.  Candace had enjoyed a degree of power that affected a lot of lives, so her death was clearly major news.

Meanwhile Colleton County is still investigating a cold case from a year ago when Linsey Thomas was run down by a Toyota and killed.  Deborah and Dwight search for the clues to the murder of Candace and the cold case of Linsey Thomas and believe they tie together in some way.  As Deborah and Dwight investigate, skeletons from the past begin tumbling out of closets and soon another dead body is found.

Death's Half Acre by Margaret Maron is a well-written, engrossing mystery novel to read.  It will keep you on the edge of your seat to its surprising climax.  Death's Half Acre is a must read for lovers of the mystery genre.
