Into the Crossfire by Lisa Marie Rice is a rollercoaster ride of suspense, drama and romance. As the first book in the Protector series, it definitely starts the series off with a big bang. The chemistry between the uber-sexy hero with a heart of gold and the gorgeous, intelligent heroine; this book kept me glued to my e-reader until the very last word.
Sam Reston is used to living on the edge. As a former Navy Seal who now owns a successful security business, he’s used to living a hard life and being undercover for days or weeks on end. Sam has had a hard life. As a young boy, he was severely beaten and put into the foster system for his own protection. This is where he met the two other foster boys who all form an unbreakable bond together, and whom he calls his ‘brothers’.
Because Sam was abused as a child, he makes special efforts to protect those who are not able to protect themselves. He especially has a soft spot for helping women and children who are in abusive situations. Sam has been known to take the most difficult of assignments. He’s been working deeply undercover on a human trafficking ring that is very dangerous and gang related.
Sam was coming into his office from a long bout of deep undercover work when he spots the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen walk into the small office next to his. He can tell by the rough way he looks and his bad hygiene from being undercover that the woman is not only unimpressed by him, she’s terrified of him as well. Sam becomes determined to meet the beauty under better circumstances and hopefully be able to talk her into having dinner with him.
In the past year, Nicole Pearce has had to make a lot of sacrifices. She was once a living the good life as a translator in Geneva. She was surrounded by beauty and wealth and she loved her job. One night, she gets a phone call that changes her life forever. Her father, who is a former U.S. Ambassador, has collapsed and has terminal brain cancer. Nicole is extremely close to her father, so when he tells her his final wish is to move back to America and live out his final days there, Nicole immediately quits her much loved job and life in Geneva and moves with her dad to San Diego and into the home left to her by her grandmother.
Nicole starts her own translation business, and even though she is making money, it’s slower to drum up business than what she thought. Now, between keeping her business afloat and paying expensive hospital bills and health care for her father; Nicole is deep in debt. To make matters worse, there is a hulking lowlife of a man who works in the office next to hers. He gives her the creeps, and she does what she can to avoid being around him.
After a lot of hard work, Nicole finally has an opportunity to land a job that could mean a lot of clout for her company. The morning of the important conference call with this company, Nicole has realized she’s locked outside of her office without a key to get inside. To her utter surprise, the lowlife hulk that works in the office next door offers to help her unlock her door…but with a price. She must have dinner with him as a payment. Nicole knows that if she misses this conference call her business will close before it has a chance to get started, so she agrees. The lowlife hulk tells her his name is Sam, and then easily opens the door and promises to pick her up at her house that night.
When Sam picks up Nicole up that night, she can’t get over the physical change in him. Gone is the dirty, stinky and grubby looking lowlife and in its place is a well dressed and very sexy hunk of a man. Not only is Nicole immediately attracted to him, she’s amazed by the sweet and respectful way he treats her ailing father. As the night progresses, both Nicole and Sam open up to each other. They tell one another things they’ve kept bottled up inside of them and learn that not only do they have some things in common, but there is an undeniable attraction between them. They end up having a very erotic night of lovemaking at Sam’s place, but when Nicole wakes up she is immediately filled with the fear of falling for Sam, and fear of getting hurt by him.
Now, Sam must do what he can to convince Nicole to take a chance on him and the budding love that is forming between them. But, when Nicole’s life becomes in danger, Sam must do what he can to not only save Nicole, but bring the terrorist who wants to kill her and destroy the lives of others to justice.
I really liked this book. It has a fast moving plot that kept me on edge as the story progressed. I thought that Sam was a very complex hero that had many interesting layers to him. I liked that he could be a real tough guy one moment and be passionate and very tender with Nicole the next. It’s obvious that he’s very intelligent and is a survivor; which makes for a very attractive hero.
Nicole is pretty interesting as well. I liked that she’s very intelligent, and I thought the love and devotion she has for her father was amazing. Her willingness to sacrifice her happiness to make sure she gave her father his dying wish was a very loving and noble thing to do. But, there was a couple of things about her I didn’t quite understand. She wears nine year old designer suits, but just a short year ago she was living the high life in Geneva? Plus, she intentionally rents a very expensive and tiny office when she is flat broke. I realize she was taking a gamble by doing that in the hopes her business took off, but that bothered me a little.
I really thought Sam and Nicole fit well together. They have some very passionate and intense chemistry together and I enjoyed watching them overcome their fears and work together as a team to bring down the bad guy. All in all I really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to the next installment to the Protector series.
