“Beneath a Yankee Sky” by J.M. Snyder is the second book in the ‘Between the States’ series.  After reading it, I’ve officially become addicted to the series and to the creative storyline in addition to its very unique and interesting characters.  As much as I loved the first book, “Under a Confederate Moon”, I think I enjoyed this book even more.  The book starts a few weeks after Caleb and Brance have deserted from their opposing war camps.

Brance and Caleb are officially on the run and trying to find a place to possibly settle down and live together in harmony. They’ve lived off the land and have become a deeply bonded mated pair.  As shape-shifting bobcats under the full moon, they are able to hunt and play freely.  As humans, life on the lam is harder, but both men are determined to live together and make a better life for themselves.  When they come across a camp of poachers, this causes a very dangerous situation for both men. When Caleb gets injured, Brance must take the necessary steps to save his mate. Will they be able to outsmart and escape the evil poachers?

Like the first book, “Beneath a Yankee Sky” is told through a third-person narrative, but the difference is you get to experience Brance’s thoughts and feelings instead of Caleb’s.  Brance is a gruff and dominating character.  He’s had a very troubled childhood and has had to survive on his own from a young age.  There were many things I learned about Brance that surprised me, and it made me understand his growly nature and sometimes standoffish behavior towards the fun loving and very affectionate Caleb.

Even though these men can be polar opposites, they really do fit well together.  There is something between them that really clicks together, making it easy for the reader to root for them to have the happy ending that they deserve.  I do think it’s possible to read this book as a stand alone in the series, but I don’t recommend it.  As usual, J.M. Snyder’s gifted storytelling makes it easy to understand what happened when Caleb and Brance met, but to truly appreciate and understand the dynamics between them, I would read the prequel to this book first.

There are three books in the ‘Between the States’ series.  I can’t wait to read the last and final installment, “A More Perfect Union” and see what happens between this incredible couple.
