A More Perfect Union by J.M. Snyder is the third and final book in the “Between the States” series. It picks up several months after the second book, Beneath a Yankee Sky and wraps up the series with a strong and interesting storyline as it started out with. Once again, Brance and Caleb easily captured my attention and heart with their struggle and determination to find a life for them together.
Brance and Caleb have almost settled into a routine of sorts. It’s been a long time since they’ve been on the run from their prospective war camps, and now they have settled together in the backwoods of Pennsylvania. They have a small cabin, barn and they are living off the land the best they know how. To the townspeople, they are cousins who live together, but in reality they are not only lovers, but they are bobcat shifters, too. Every full moon, Brance and Caleb shift into bobcats and are able to roam, hunt and make love as they see fit, while they explore the boundaries of their land.
On one of their trips to town, they find out that there is a lone bobcat supposedly on their land. Through the rumor mill they hear that the sheriff’s daughter, Anna, had somehow gotten lost and killed by this rogue bobcat. Both Brance and Caleb decide to investigate this hearsay, and on the next full moon they shift and come across a very pregnant bobcat, Anna. Not knowing quite what to do, they decide to allow the female bobcat to stay until she has her cubs.
Will Anna come in between the strong bond and eternal love that Caleb and Brance share?
I loved this series. With every book, Brance and Caleb’s characters become better developed and likeable heroes. The chemistry and the deep love they have for one another continue to grow and flourish as they spend more time together. Even though Brance and Caleb are really total opposites, their differences manage to balance the each other out, making them addictive and a lot of fun to read about.
I admit I was worried at the first mention of the female Anna. I was afraid that Brance and Caleb might somehow get physically involved with her, adding a third into their wonderful relationship. Thank goodness, this did not happen. Not only is Brance and Caleb not interested in adding a female to the mix, but Anna’s not too interested in them either.
I hate to see the series come to an end. Saying goodbye to two wonderfully written and likeable characters is always a hard thing to do. I thought the series ended very happily and appropriately for the times, and I know I’ll revisit this series again in the near future. Although it’s probably not necessary to read the entire series to understand what’s going on, but I highly recommend that you do. This way you’ll be able to see the amazing dynamics between Brance and Caleb build and develop into a loving and wonderful couple. Here are the books in series order: Under a Confederate Moon, Beneath a Yankee Sky and a More Perfect Union.
