Dark Moon by Connie Wood is a fast paced, addictive paranormal romance that kept me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time that I was engrossed in this novel. From the first page, Dark Moon is full of twists and surprising turns that kept me so entertained and enthralled with the characters in the book, I couldn’t put it down until I finished the very last page. Tynan lives a in a very cold and dark world and has a pretty bleak existence. He was once an acclaimed venator; now he’s be exiled to hunt down and eliminate man killing shape-shifters in the middle of the Arctic. As a venator, he has strong self-healing powers, visions, great strength and perseverance, but he is still considered a human. One day Tynan is in the middle of a battle with a shape-shifting polar bear when he has this horrible vision that his brother has been murdered. Tynan knows he must avenge his brother’s death, so he comes out of exile to hunt down his brother’s killer.
When he arrives at the town that his brother lived, he finds himself at his brother’s memorial service that is held at a youth center that his brother was very involved in. Once he’s there, he spots a spunky, artistic woman giving a lovely eulogy at the podium. As soon, as their eyes meet from across the room, he is immediately captivated with her and feels an instant connection with her.
Moonshine (Moon) has been trying to live her own life for years. She has struggled to get out from under the stifling life her parents want her to live and fulfill her dream of running a successful youth center and becoming a well-known artist. She just recently broke it off with her cold and uncaring fiancé, and now she is grieving the death of her friend. The second she sees the intimidating, stunningly handsome man enter the memorial service, she almost falls instantly in love with him. There is something about him that makes her unable to deny her attraction and feelings toward him that speaks to her heart.
As the two become entangled in a web of conspiracy, murder, deceit and shape-shifters, an unbreakable bond forms between them. Soon both of their lives are in danger and both realize that things are not always as they seem.
There are several things that I really liked about this book. I really appreciated that Moon was not a shrinking violet. Now, she’s not uber tough, but she doesn’t take things that happen to her lying down. She was very supportive and helped Tynan out throughout the novel and that was appealing to me as a reader. She’s smart, quirky and fights for/with the love of her life so they can have a future together…I really loved that.
Another thing I really liked was the different dynamics of the shape-shifters and venators that Ms. Wood created. I liked the politics of everything, and I understood all of the many different things that were going on throughout the book without being confused or bogged down from too much information.
Dark Moon is told in third person. Although, it is seen primarily through Tynan and Moon’s view, it also has other characters points of view as well. This was a tad bit distracting, but it did keep the story flowing quite nicely as well as the reader informed of everything that was happening at any given point.
I really hope that Dark Moon will end up becoming a series. I have a feeling that it will because the story ends with some unanswered questions. Plus, I am dying to read more about Dane, Darius and a couple others. It will be interesting to see how a shifter would co-exist with a human in Ms. Wood’s world.
One word of warning to some readers: Dark Moon has some graphic violence in it. There is a lot of gore, violence and death in his book. It is still a very strong romance, but those who do not care for a lot of blood and gore may want to pass this one up.
